Troubleshooting guide for Windows 10 and 11 · Updated October 15, 2026
Scanner not detected, not scanning, or stuck after a Windows update? This guide gives 10 fixes in the order that solves most cases fastest, from the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service and driver reinstall to network, barcode and system repair steps. It works for HP, Epson, Canon, Brother, Kodak and Dell scanners.

Press Windows + R, type services.msc, open Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), set Startup type to Automatic and click Start. Then unplug the scanner, restart the PC, and plug the scanner straight into a USB port on the computer, not a hub. If it is still missing, remove the scanner and reinstall the driver from the maker’s website (Fixes 2 and 4).
Windows scanning apps depend on the WIA service to talk to scanners and cameras. When that service is stopped, a driver is damaged, or an update changes a setting, the scanner shows as offline, not detected, or “You need a WIA driver to use this device.”
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft has since extended the free consumer Extended Security Updates program for version 22H2 until October 12, 2027, as reported by Help Net Security. Keep the PC fully updated, because old Windows 10 builds have known scanner bugs (see Fix 8). Older scanners may also have no new Windows 10 drivers.
Tap what best matches your problem and get the best order to try the fixes.
Match what you see to the most likely cause, then jump to that fix.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Scanner not detected at all | Cable, port, power, or damaged driver | Fix 1, Fix 4 |
| “You need a WIA driver to use this device” | Missing or corrupt WIA driver, or WIA service stopped | Fix 2, Fix 5 |
| Printer prints but will not scan | Scan software missing or WIA service off | Fix 2, Fix 5 |
| Stopped working after a Windows update | Update replaced the driver or changed a setting | Fix 8, Fix 4 |
| Wi-Fi or network scanner not found | Network discovery, firewall, WSD or wrong network | Fix 7 |
| Scans in one app but not another | App setting or wrong scanner source (WIA vs TWAIN) | Fix 6 |
| Barcode or QR scanner types nothing | Wrong mode, cable, or no cursor focus | Fix 9 |
| Service error 1068 or random failures | Dependent services off or damaged system files | Fix 2, Fix 10 |
Work from Fix 1 down. Stop as soon as the scanner works. Tick “I used this method” to track progress.
services.msc and press Enter.Set-Service -Name stisvc -StartupType Automatic Restart-Service -Name stisvc Set-Service -Name ShellHWDetection -StartupType Automatic Start-Service -Name ShellHWDetection
stisvc is the short name of the WIA service. HP’s support team gives the same check: status should be Running and startup type Automatic.
The troubleshooter mainly repairs services and driver settings. If it finds nothing, move on, because it cannot replace a missing maker driver.
Look for a yellow warning mark in Device Manager. A device under Other devices or “Unknown device” means no driver is installed. Go to Fix 5.
Right-click the scan program’s icon → Properties → Compatibility → tick Run this program in compatibility mode and pick an older Windows version. This is a known workaround for older scan apps.
Avoid “driver updater” tools. Download drivers only from the manufacturer.
For Office, OneDrive or QuickBooks, also check that the save folder exists and that you have permission to write to it.
services.msc, set these to Automatic and start them: Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, Network Location Awareness.ping 192.168.1.50
Replace the sample address with your scanner’s IP. No reply means a network problem, not a Windows scanner problem.
Microsoft documents a bug in Windows 10 versions up to 1909 where an app cannot find a USB scanner after a network (WSD) scanner was disconnected. It is fixed in version 2004 and later. Update to 22H2. The workaround is to uninstall the scanner, restart the WIA service and restart the PC.
Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic readers have their own setup tools, such as Zebra 123Scan. Use them to switch the scanner’s interface mode.
msconfig → Services → hide Microsoft services → Disable all, then restart) to check whether security or other software blocks the scanner.sfc /scannow DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
If the scanner fails on a second PC as well, the scanner hardware or its USB port is faulty and needs repair or replacement.
Search for your code here. Code names come from Windows and WIA error definitions. The fixes are practical troubleshooting steps, and the same code can have more than one cause.
| Error | What it usually means | Try |
|---|---|---|
| 0x800706BA | RPC server unavailable. A required service is stopped, or a firewall blocks a network scanner | Fix 2, Fix 7, Fix 10 |
| 0x80070422 | The service is disabled, often the WIA service | Fix 2 |
| 0x80070005 | Access denied. Permission problem on the app or the save folder | Run the app as administrator, choose another save folder, Fix 10 (new account) |
| 0x80004005 | Unspecified error, often a driver or communication conflict | Fix 4, Fix 5 |
| 0x80210015 | “No scanners were detected” | Fix 1, Fix 2, Fix 4 |
| 0x8021000A | Communication error with the scanner | Fix 1 (cable, port), Fix 5 |
| 0x80210006 | Scanner is busy | Close other scan apps, restart WIA (Fix 2) |
| 0x80210005 | Scanner is offline | Power, cable or network: Fix 1, Fix 7 |
| 0x80210001 | General WIA error | Fix 4, Fix 5 |
| Error 1068 | A service dependency failed to start | Fix 2 (Dependencies tab) |
| “You need a WIA driver” | No working WIA driver or WIA service stopped | Fix 2, Fix 4, Fix 5 |
Use these after Fixes 1 and 2. Menu names change between software versions.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| QuickBooks or Office apps | Test in Windows Scan first (Fix 6). If only that app fails, update it and run it as administrator. |
| Virtual machine or Remote Desktop | A USB scanner is attached to the real PC. Connect it to the VM from the VM’s USB menu, or scan on the host. Remote sessions often do not pass scanners through. |
| Java “Scanner” not working | This is the java.util.Scanner class in code, not a hardware scanner. Check input handling and imports instead. |
| Windows 11 | Fixes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 are the same. Only the troubleshooter path differs (Fix 3). |
| What | Where or command |
|---|---|
| Services | services.msc → Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) |
| Device Manager | devmgmt.msc → Imaging devices |
| Printers and scanners | ms-settings:printers |
| Restart WIA | Restart-Service stisvc |
| Repair system files | sfc /scannow then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth |
| Test network scanner | ping scanner-IP |
Start the Windows Image Acquisition service, reconnect the scanner directly to the PC, and reinstall the maker’s driver. That solves most scanner problems in Windows 10. For network scanners fix discovery and the firewall, for barcode readers test in Notepad and reset to keyboard mode, and use SFC and DISM as the last software step.
