The short version

Open Settings → System → Battery → See which apps are affecting your battery life and close the top offenders. Turn on Battery saver and set the power slider to Best battery life. Then open Command Prompt (Admin) and run powercfg /batteryreport to see whether your battery capacity has dropped. If the drain happens in sleep, check powercfg /requests and use Hibernate. If it happens when the laptop is shut down, turn off Fast Startup. If it began after an update, update your drivers and BIOS or roll the update back. If the battery report shows low capacity, replace the battery.

  1. Check battery health with a battery report (Fix 1).
  2. Find the draining app in Battery usage and Task Manager (Fix 2).
  3. Turn on Battery saver and lower brightness and timeouts (Fix 3 and 4).
  4. Fix sleep and shutdown drain with powercfg and Fast Startup (Fix 5 and 6).
  5. Update drivers and BIOS, or roll back the bad update (Fix 8).
  6. Reinstall the battery driver, then replace the battery if it is worn (Fix 9 and 12).

The 12 Fixes in Detail

Each fix shows when to use it, why it works, the exact steps and commands, what success looks like and what to do if it fails.

Progress: 0/12
01Check battery health with a battery reportData risk: None⏱ 5 minAlways start here
Use this whenBefore you change anything, especially if the battery drops fast even when the laptop is idle, or it died much sooner than it used to.
Why it worksWindows can save a report with your battery's design capacity, its current full-charge capacity, cycle count and recent usage. It tells you whether you have a software problem to fix or a worn battery to replace.
  1. Open the Start menu, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run the command below. It saves a report in your user folder and opens it in your browser.
  3. At the top, look at Design capacity and Full charge capacity under Installed batteries. Note the Cycle count if your laptop shows it.
  4. Scroll to Battery usage (last 3 days) and Usage history to see when the charge fell fastest, and what state the PC was in (Active, Connected standby or Sleep).
  5. Read the result. If full charge capacity is close to design capacity, the battery is healthy and the drain comes from software or settings (Fix 2 to 11). If it is far lower, roughly half of design capacity or less, the battery is worn (Fix 9 and 12).
  6. Check the charger too. Use the original charger, or one with the same or higher wattage. A weak charger can charge more slowly than the laptop uses power.
Command Prompt (Admin)
powercfg /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%\battery-report.html"
start "" "%USERPROFILE%\battery-report.html"
  • /batteryreport — builds an HTML report of battery capacity and recent usage
  • /output — saves the file in your user folder so it is easy to find
  • start — opens the saved report in your default browser
💡
Write the numbers down

Note design capacity, full charge capacity and the date. After your fixes, run the report again in a week and compare.

🎯What success looks like: A report opens that shows design capacity, full charge capacity and recent battery usage.
↪️If it fails: If Windows cannot create a report, the battery driver may be damaged. Go to Fix 9, then try again. Desktop PCs have no battery, so they cannot make this report.
02Find the app that is draining the batteryData risk: None⏱ 10 minFastest win
Use this whenThe battery drops quickly while you work, the fan runs a lot or the laptop feels warm.
Why it worksOne busy app or background process can use more power than everything else combined. Windows tracks usage per app and per process, so you can see the culprit and stop it.
  1. Open Settings → System → Battery and click See which apps are affecting your battery life. Set the list to Last 24 hours.
  2. Note the apps at the top. Click one and, if the options appear, switch off Let Windows decide when this app can run in the background and Allow the app to run background tasks for apps you do not need running.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click More details, then right-click any column header on the Processes tab and tick Power usage and Power usage trend.
  4. Click the CPU column to sort by processor use. Anything stuck high while you are idle is a suspect: a browser tab, a sync tool, a security scan, a game launcher, Antimalware Service Executable or Windows Search Indexer.
  5. Right-click a program you recognise and choose End task. If you do not recognise a name, search for it before you end it, and never end Windows system processes.
  6. Run for 30 minutes with that app closed and note how much charge you lose. Compare it with before.
✅
Normal versus suspicious

Video calls, streaming, cloud sync and browsers with many tabs are heavy users, and that is normal while you use them. The real question is what stays busy when you are doing nothing.

🎯What success looks like: The Power usage column mostly shows Very low, and no process stays on High when the laptop is idle.
↪️If it fails: If nothing stands out but the battery still drains while idle, continue with Fix 5 (sleep), Fix 7 (power plan) and Fix 8 (drivers).
03Turn on Battery saver and tune power mode and screen settingsData risk: None⏱ 5 minQuick savings
Use this whenBattery life is shorter than you would like, the screen is bright, the refresh rate is high or the laptop rarely goes to sleep.
Why it worksThe screen, processor and wireless radios are the biggest power users. Battery saver and the power mode slider cut background activity, lower brightness and limit the processor without changing anything permanently.
  1. Click the battery icon in the taskbar and drag the slider to Best battery life (the slider shows when you are on battery).
  2. Open Settings → System → Battery. Turn on Battery saver and set Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below to about 30%. Keep Lower screen brightness while in battery saver ticked.
  3. Open Settings → System → Display and lower Brightness. The screen is usually the largest single use of power.
  4. Open Settings → System → Power & sleep. Under On battery power, set the screen to turn off after 2 to 5 minutes and the PC to sleep after 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. If your screen runs at 120 Hz or 144 Hz, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display settings → Display adapter properties → Monitor and choose 60 Hertz for battery use.
  6. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you do not need them (or use Airplane mode), switch off the keyboard backlight and unplug USB devices. A phone charging from the laptop drains it fast.
💡
Does Battery saver cause harm?

No. It limits background apps and some notifications, so certain apps may only sync when you open them. Turning it off returns everything to normal.

🎯What success looks like: The slider shows Best battery life, the screen is dimmer and the battery loses noticeably less charge in the same test.
↪️If it fails: If the drain is still high on the lowest settings, an app, a driver or the battery itself is the cause. Continue with Fix 4 and Fix 8.
04Stop background apps and startup programsData risk: None⏱ 10–15 minApps that start with Windows
Use this whenThe laptop is busy right after you sign in, the fan spins up for no clear reason or many tray icons appear at startup.
Why it worksApps that launch with Windows and keep running in the background keep the processor, disk and network awake, so the laptop never settles into low-power idle.
  1. Open Settings → Apps → Startup and switch off anything you do not need at sign-in: chat apps, game launchers, updaters and printer tools. You can also use Task Manager → Startup and choose Disable on items with High startup impact.
  2. Open Settings → Privacy → Background apps. Turn off Let apps run in the background, or switch off individual apps you rarely use.
  3. Pause cloud sync you do not need right now. Right-click the OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive icon in the tray and choose Pause syncing.
  4. In your browser, close unused tabs, remove extensions you do not recognise and turn on its battery or memory saving feature (called sleeping tabs, Memory Saver or Energy Saver, depending on the browser).
  5. Restart the PC and let it sit idle for a few minutes, then check Task Manager again.
⚠️
Disable only what you recognise

Do not disable your security software, or tools from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Realtek or your laptop maker in Startup. They can keep power, touchpad and graphics working properly.

🎯What success looks like: Fewer programs start with Windows, and Task Manager shows low CPU use a few minutes after sign-in.
↪️If it fails: If an unknown program keeps starting itself again, scan for malware and unwanted software in Fix 11.
05Fix battery drain after sleep (lid closed)Data risk: None⏱ 15–20 minDrains with the lid closed
Use this whenThe battery is much lower in the morning than when you closed the lid, or the laptop is warm when you take it out of the bag.
Why it worksSomething is waking the laptop or stopping it from sleeping fully: a wake timer, a USB or network device, an app that asks Windows to stay awake, or a Modern Standby problem. Windows can tell you which one.
  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run powercfg /a. Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) means Modern Standby. Standby (S3) means classic sleep.
  2. Run powercfg /requests. Anything listed under DISPLAY, SYSTEM or AWAYMODE other than None is keeping the laptop awake. The name shows which app or driver to close, update or uninstall.
  3. After a bad night, run powercfg /lastwake to see what woke it, and powercfg /devicequery wake_armed to list devices that are allowed to wake it.
  4. On a Modern Standby laptop, run powercfg /sleepstudy. It saves an HTML report (the command prints the location) that shows which apps and drivers used power while the PC slept.
  5. In Device Manager, open your network adapter and mouse, go to Properties → Power Management and untick Allow this device to wake the computer where you do not need it.
  6. Open Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → Sleep → Allow wake timers and set it to Disable (or Important wake timers only).
  7. For the simplest fix, make the lid use Hibernate on battery. Open Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what closing the lid does and set On battery to Hibernate. If Hibernate is missing, run powercfg /h on first.
Command Prompt (Admin)
powercfg /a
powercfg /requests
powercfg /lastwake
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed
powercfg /sleepstudy
powercfg /h on
  • /a — lists the sleep states your laptop supports
  • /requests — shows what is currently stopping the PC from sleeping
  • /lastwake — shows what woke the PC last time
  • /devicequery wake_armed — lists devices that can wake the PC
  • /sleepstudy — creates a report of power use during Modern Standby
  • /h on — turns hibernation on so the lid action can use it
💡
Hibernate is gentle on the battery

Hibernate saves your session to disk and powers the laptop off, so it uses almost no battery. It resumes a little slower than sleep.

🎯What success looks like: powercfg /requests shows None, and the battery loses only a few percent overnight, or almost nothing with Hibernate.
↪️If it fails: If the wake source is a driver or firmware item you cannot remove, update drivers and BIOS (Fix 8) or keep using Hibernate.
06Fix battery drain when the laptop is shut downData risk: None⏱ 10–15 minDrains when switched off
Use this whenThe battery is much lower after the laptop was shut down overnight or for a few days, or the case feels warm when it should be off.
Why it worksIn Windows 10, Shut down is a hybrid shutdown by default (Fast Startup), so the laptop may not be fully off. USB ports that keep charging devices and wake settings in the BIOS can also drain the battery while it is off.
  1. Test a true shutdown. Hold Shift while you click Shut down, or use Restart, which always reloads Windows fully. Check the battery the next morning.
  2. Turn off Fast Startup. Open Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Change settings that are currently unavailable, untick Turn on fast startup (recommended) and click Save changes.
  3. Unplug everything before you shut down: USB drives, dongles, phone cables, SD cards and docks.
  4. Check the BIOS or UEFI. Restart and press the setup key for your brand (often F2, F10, Del or Esc), or use Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings. Look for options such as Wake on LAN, Wake on USB, Always-on USB charging (for example USB PowerShare on some Dell laptops) and alarm or RTC wake, and set them to Disabled. Names vary by maker.
  5. Know what is normal. A switched-off laptop slowly loses a little charge over days. A big drop overnight is not normal.
💡
Is Fast Startup bad?

It is not harmful, but it keeps some hardware state saved, and on some laptops that interacts badly with drivers. Turning it off only adds a few seconds to startup.

🎯What success looks like: After a full shutdown overnight, the battery percentage is almost the same as the night before.
↪️If it fails: If it still drains with everything off and unplugged, battery wear or a hardware fault is likely. Go to Fix 9 and Fix 12.
07Reset the power plan and run the Power troubleshooterData risk: None⏱ 10 minCustom or messy power plan
Use this whenThe drain began after you, a laptop maker's tool, a game or a so-called booster app changed power plan settings.
Why it worksCustom or damaged power plans can stop the processor, Wi-Fi or USB ports from idling. Restoring default plans removes them, and the energy report shows what is still misbehaving.
  1. Open Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Power, run it and apply what it suggests.
  2. Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run powercfg -restoredefaultschemes. This resets every power plan to the Windows defaults.
  3. Run powercfg /energy. It watches the PC for 60 seconds (keep apps closed and leave the laptop alone) and saves energy-report.html. The command prints where the file is.
  4. Open the report and read the Errors and Warnings, such as devices that do not enter low power, processor throttling or USB suspend problems.
  5. Optional: open Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings. Set Wireless Adapter Settings → Power Saving Mode to Maximum Power Saving and USB settings → USB selective suspend setting to Enabled for On battery.
  6. Optional: under Processor power management → Maximum processor state, set On battery to 99%. On many Intel laptops this switches off turbo boost, which lowers heat and power at the cost of peak speed.
Command Prompt (Admin)
powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
powercfg /energy
  • -restoredefaultschemes — restores the default Windows power plans
  • /energy — runs a 60-second power efficiency check and saves a report
⚠️
Custom plans are lost

Resetting the schemes removes plans you or a manufacturer tool created. Write down any settings you want to rebuild before you run it.

🎯What success looks like: The plans show Windows defaults and the energy report lists few or no errors.
↪️If it fails: If the report names a specific driver or device, update or reinstall it in Fix 8 and Fix 9.
08Update Windows, drivers and BIOS (or roll back what broke it)Data risk: Low⏱ 30–60 minStarted after an update
Use this whenThe drain began after a Windows update, a driver update or a BIOS change, or your drivers and BIOS are many months old.
Why it worksChipset, graphics, touchpad and firmware drivers decide how well the hardware idles. A new update can introduce a power bug, and a later one usually fixes it. Rolling back shows which change is responsible.
  1. Open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update, click Check for updates, install and restart. Then click View optional updates to see driver updates.
  2. Open your laptop maker's support page or tool: Dell SupportAssist or Dell Command Update, HP Support Assistant, Lenovo Vantage or System Update, or the Asus, Acer and MSI equivalents. Install the latest chipset, graphics, power management or Intel Management Engine and touchpad drivers. Graphics drivers are also available from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA.
  3. Read the BIOS release notes on the same support page. If they mention battery, charging, power or sleep fixes, update it. Keep the charger connected and do not interrupt the update. Save your BitLocker key first if the drive is encrypted.
  4. If the drain started after one update: open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → View update history → Uninstall updates, pick the recent update and choose Uninstall. For a driver, open Device Manager, double-click the device, go to the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if it is available.
  5. Create a restore point before big changes: open System Properties → System Protection → Create.
  6. Restart and test again using the same routine as before.
💡
Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. Microsoft has extended its consumer Extended Security Updates program to October 12, 2027, so keeping Windows fully updated still matters. Open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update to see whether the enrolment offer is shown on your PC.

⚠️
BIOS updates need care

Only use the BIOS file from your laptop maker for your exact model. Plug in the charger first and never switch the laptop off during the update. A failed BIOS update can stop the laptop from starting.

🎯What success looks like: Windows, drivers and BIOS are current, and the idle drain is lower than before.
↪️If it fails: If updating or rolling back changes nothing, reinstall the battery drivers and calibrate in Fix 9.
09Reinstall battery drivers, check the charger and calibrateData risk: None⏱ 15–30 minWrong percentage or poor charging
Use this whenThe percentage jumps or sticks, Windows says plugged in, not charging, the laptop shuts off at 30% or the report looks fine but the battery behaves oddly.
Why it worksWindows reads battery data through two small drivers. If they are damaged, the gauge can be wrong. Calibration helps the gauge match the real charge. It does not bring back lost capacity.
  1. Check the charger first. Use the original charger or one with the same or higher wattage and voltage, try another wall socket and check the cable and plug for damage. Weak chargers can charge slower than the laptop drains.
  2. Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Batteries. Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and choose Uninstall device. Do the same for Microsoft AC Adapter. Do not tick any option to delete driver software.
  3. Shut the laptop down fully and unplug the charger. If the battery is removable, take it out for 30 seconds and put it back. If not, hold the power button for 15 to 30 seconds as a hard reset (check your model's manual).
  4. Plug the charger in and start the PC. Windows reinstalls the drivers. If the battery entries do not return, open Device Manager → Action → Scan for hardware changes.
  5. Calibrate once. Charge to 100% and leave it on the charger for about an hour. Unplug it and use the laptop normally until it falls to roughly 5 to 10%. Then charge to 100% without interruption. Many makers offer their own battery tool (Lenovo Vantage, Dell Power Manager, HP Support Assistant), so use it if you have one.
⚠️
Do not repeat deep discharges

Calibration will not fix a worn battery, and repeated deep discharges wear lithium batteries faster. Do it once, then leave it.

🎯What success looks like: The percentage moves smoothly, the laptop charges normally and the drain matches what the battery report shows.
↪️If it fails: If the laptop still shuts off early or the report shows low capacity, plan a battery replacement in Fix 12.
10Cut the drain while gaming or running heavy appsData risk: None⏱ 10 minDrains while gaming
Use this whenThe battery runs down in an hour or less while you game, edit video, use design apps or sit in long video calls.
Why it worksLaptops with a separate graphics card often switch it on and run the processor at full speed. Letting lighter apps use the efficient graphics chip and capping frame rates saves a lot of battery.
  1. Plug in when you can. Heavy tasks drain any laptop quickly, and many laptops also run slower on battery.
  2. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics settings. Choose Desktop app or Microsoft Store app, add the app, click Options and pick Power saving for apps that do not need the full graphics card.
  3. In your graphics control panel, cap the frame rate (for example 30 or 60) and use the battery-friendly mode: NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings (Max Frame Rate, Power management mode), the AMD Software or Intel Graphics Command Center equivalents. Names vary by driver version.
  4. Lower the game's resolution and detail, and set the Windows power slider to Better battery if gaming on battery is a must.
  5. Close extra launchers and overlays such as chat overlays, recording tools and RGB or monitoring apps.
  6. If your laptop has a maker tool such as Armoury Crate, Lenovo Vantage, Alienware Command Center or OMEN Gaming Hub, choose a Silent, Quiet or Eco mode on battery.
💡
Heavy loads drain batteries by design

A gaming laptop that lasts only one to two hours while gaming on battery is behaving as expected. If light tasks such as web browsing drain the battery fast, go back to Fix 2 and Fix 8.

🎯What success looks like: The same game or app runs cooler, and the battery lasts noticeably longer in the same session.
↪️If it fails: If a light task still drains the battery quickly, return to Fix 2 and Fix 8, then check the battery health in Fix 1.
11Scan for malware and repair Windows filesData risk: None⏱ 20–40 minHot, loud and busy for no reason
Use this whenThe processor is busy when you are doing nothing, the fan runs all the time or an unknown process keeps using power.
Why it worksMalware, crypto miners and unwanted programs run quietly in the background and use power around the clock. Damaged system files can also make processes loop. You can check both without deleting your documents.
  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and click Scan now. The PC restarts and scans before Windows loads.
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features, sort by Install date and uninstall anything you did not install yourself, including toolbars, driver updaters, PC optimizers and battery saver apps.
  3. Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run the two commands below. DISM can pause at a percentage for a long time, so let it finish.
  4. Restart and check Task Manager again after 10 minutes of idle time.
Command Prompt (Admin)
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
  • DISM … /RestoreHealth — repairs the Windows component store
  • sfc /scannow — checks protected system files and replaces damaged ones
✅
Skip the battery booster apps

Apps that promise to boost battery life or fix drivers rarely help, and some of them cause drain or install unwanted software.

🎯What success looks like: Defender finds nothing, SFC reports no integrity violations or repairs them, and idle processor use drops.
↪️If it fails: If the laptop still drains on a clean, repaired Windows, test with a Windows reset in Fix 12 to rule out software completely.
12Reset Windows 10, then replace the battery if needed (last resort)Data risk: High⏱ 60–120 minNothing else worked
Use this whenThe battery report shows low capacity, the laptop dies suddenly, or the drain stays high after Fix 1 to 11. Also if the battery looks swollen.
Why it worksA reset removes every software cause. If the drain continues on a clean Windows, the cause is the battery or other hardware, and a new battery is the fix.
  1. Back up everything to an external drive or cloud storage first. Have your BitLocker key and Microsoft account details ready, and keep the charger connected.
  2. Open Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → Reset this PC → Get started. Choose Keep my files (removes apps and resets settings) or Remove everything after a verified backup.
  3. After the reset, install Windows updates and your laptop maker's drivers, then test the battery before you reinstall your apps. Add apps back a few at a time.
  4. If it still drains, run your maker's hardware diagnostics. Dell: press F12 at startup and choose Diagnostics. HP: press F2 at startup for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Lenovo: use Lenovo Vantage and run a battery or hardware scan.
  5. Replace the battery with a genuine or certified one from your maker or a reputable supplier. Some laptops have an easy removable battery, while others have an internal one that a technician should change. Check whether your warranty still covers it.
  6. After the replacement, run the battery report from Fix 1 again to confirm the new capacity.
🚫
Swollen battery: stop using it

If the case bulges, the trackpad lifts or the lid will not close flat, stop using and charging the laptop right away and take it to a qualified technician. Do not press on it, puncture it or leave it charging.

💡
Reset this PC will not run?

See our guide How to Fix "Reset This PC" Not Working. The recovery steps (WinRE, DISM and SFC, repair install) apply to Windows 10 as well.

🎯What success looks like: Windows is clean and the drain matches the battery report, or the new battery shows its full design capacity.
↪️If it fails: If a new battery on a clean Windows still drains fast, the charging circuit or motherboard may be at fault. Contact the maker or a repair shop.
08

Battery Drops in Minutes or the Percentage Jumps

If the battery falls from 40% to off, shuts the laptop down at 30% or the number jumps around, work through these checks:

  1. Run the battery report. Compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity (Fix 1).
  2. Test on the charger. If the laptop runs steadily on mains power but switches off when unplugged, the battery is the likely cause.
  3. Reinstall the battery drivers and calibrate once (Fix 9).
  4. Check temperature. A laptop that sat in a hot car or in the cold can show wrong readings for a while. Let it return to room temperature and test again.
  5. Run your maker's diagnostics. Dell uses F12 → Diagnostics, HP uses F2 → HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, and Lenovo uses Lenovo Vantage (Fix 12).
  6. Replace the battery if the tests confirm it is worn, or if it looks swollen (Fix 12).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my laptop battery draining so fast in Windows 10?
Usually it is a busy app or background process, high brightness and power settings, wake-ups during sleep, a driver or update problem, or a worn battery. Start with Settings → System → Battery → See which apps are affecting your battery life, and run a battery report to see whether the battery itself is healthy.
How do I check my battery health in Windows 10?
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run powercfg /batteryreport. Open the saved file and compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity. A large gap means the battery has worn out.
Why does my laptop battery drain fast after a Windows update?
An update can change drivers or power settings, or run background tasks for a day or two. Install pending updates, update your drivers and BIOS, and if the drain continues, uninstall the update or roll back the driver as shown in Fix 8.
Why does my laptop battery drain when it is shut down?
Fast Startup can leave the laptop in a hybrid state, and USB charging ports or wake settings in the BIOS can keep using power. Test with Shift + Shut down, turn off Fast Startup, unplug devices and check the BIOS wake options (Fix 6). A small loss over several days is normal.
Why does my battery drain while the laptop is asleep?
A wake timer, a network or USB device, an app that blocks sleep or a Modern Standby problem is usually responsible. Use powercfg /requests, /lastwake and /sleepstudy to find it, or set the lid to Hibernate on battery (Fix 5).
Why does my laptop battery drain in 5 minutes?
A battery that falls from a decent charge to empty in minutes is usually worn out, or its percentage gauge is wrong. Check the battery report, reinstall the battery drivers and calibrate once. If the capacity is low, replace the battery (Fix 9 and 12).
Why is my laptop battery draining faster than it charges?
A weak or damaged charger, or heavy use while plugged in, can use power faster than the charger supplies it. Use the original charger with the right wattage, check the cable and close heavy apps. If it happens with light use and the original charger, the battery or charging circuit may be faulty.
Does Battery saver slow my laptop down?
It lowers brightness and limits background activity, so some apps may update less often and the laptop may feel slightly slower. It does not cause damage, and you can turn it off at any time.
Is it safe to run powercfg commands?
Yes. /batteryreport, /energy, /requests, /lastwake and /a only read information or create reports. /restoredefaultschemes resets your power plans and removes custom ones, and /h on or /h off changes hibernation. None of them touch your files.
Should I calibrate my laptop battery?
Only if the percentage is wrong, such as jumping or shutting down early, and only once. Calibration helps the gauge, not the capacity. Repeated deep discharges wear a lithium battery faster.
Can a BIOS update fix laptop battery drain?
Sometimes. Release notes for some BIOS versions mention fixes for charging, battery and sleep behaviour. Download it from your laptop maker for your exact model, keep the charger connected and save your BitLocker key first.
Is fast battery drain a sign of a virus?
It can be. If the processor is busy while you are idle, the fan never stops or you see unknown programs, run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan and uninstall anything you did not install (Fix 11).
Does Fast Startup drain the battery?
On some laptops it can, because a hybrid shutdown is not a full power-off and some drivers misbehave with it. Turning Fast Startup off is safe and only makes startup a few seconds slower.
Will upgrading to Windows 11 fix my battery drain?
Not necessarily. Battery life depends on your hardware, drivers and what is causing the drain, so fix the cause first. Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, and Microsoft has extended consumer Extended Security Updates to October 12, 2027, so upgrading is mainly a security and support decision rather than a battery fix.
When should I replace my laptop battery?
Replace it when the battery report shows full charge capacity far below design capacity (roughly half or less), the laptop shuts off suddenly or the battery lasts only minutes even on a clean Windows. Replace it at once if it is swollen.
Will resetting Windows delete my files?
Reset this PC with Keep my files keeps your personal files but removes apps and resets settings. Remove everything deletes files, apps and settings. Always back up first.
Are the steps different for Dell, HP and Lenovo laptops?
The Windows steps are the same. What differs is the maker's software and BIOS names, such as Dell SupportAssist and Dell Power Manager, HP Support Assistant and Battery Health Manager, or Lenovo Vantage and Conservation Mode.

Bottom line

Fast battery drain in Windows 10 usually comes from a busy app, aggressive power settings, wake-ups in sleep or shutdown, an outdated driver or BIOS, or a worn battery. Run a battery report, find the draining app, turn on Battery saver, fix sleep and shutdown drain and update your drivers. If the report shows low capacity or the laptop dies suddenly, replace the battery. Reset Windows only after a full backup.
