How to Adjust Text Size & Desktop Icon Size in Windows 11

Text too small, icons too big, labels cut off, or everything tiny on a new laptop or monitor? Windows 11 has separate controls for text, overall scale, desktop icons, File Explorer and the taskbar. This playbook shows what each one changes, how to get the combo you want, and how to fix blurry text and icons that reset or move.

Quick Answer

✅
The short version

For text only, open Settings → Accessibility → Text size and drag the slider. For everything, open Settings → System → Display and change Scale. For desktop icons, right-click the desktop, choose View and pick Large, Medium or Small icons, or hold Ctrl and scroll. Windows 11 has no separate setting for icon label text, so combine Text size with icon size to get what you want.

  1. Text too small? Text size slider (Method 1).
  2. Whole screen too small? Scale (Method 2).
  3. Icons only? View menu or Ctrl + scroll (Method 3).
  4. Labels, spacing or layout? Methods 4, 5 and 6.
  5. Folders, taskbar, apps, monitors? Methods 7 to 10.
  6. Blurry or resetting? Method 12.

The 12 Methods in Detail

Each method lists who it suits, what it changes, the steps and commands, what you will see and how to undo it.

Used: 0/12
01Change text size only: Settings → Accessibility → Text sizeEasy⏱ 2 minText only, icons stay the same
Best forWords in Windows and apps are too small or too large, but icons, windows and the taskbar look fine.
What it changesText in Windows and apps that follow the setting, including desktop icon labels, menus and title bars. It does not change icon pictures or taskbar icons.
  1. Press Windows + U to open Accessibility, or open Settings → Accessibility.
  2. Click Text size.
  3. Drag the Text size slider to the right to enlarge text. A preview shows the result.
  4. Click Apply and wait while Windows updates.
  5. Close and reopen apps that did not change.
Run dialog (Windows + R)
ms-settings:easeofaccess-display
  • ms-settings:easeofaccess-display — opens the Text size page in Accessibility
💡
Range and defaults

The slider runs from 100% (default) to 225%. Start with small steps, such as 110% or 125%. Some older apps and parts of Windows still follow Scale instead, so they may not change.

🎯You will see: Menus, Settings, File Explorer and desktop icon labels get larger or smaller. Icon pictures stay the same.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Open the same page, drag the slider to 100% and click Apply.
02Make everything bigger or smaller with Display ScaleEasy⏱ 3 minText, apps, icons and taskbar together
Best forThe whole screen looks too small, especially on a high resolution laptop or 4K monitor.
What it changesScale enlarges text, apps, icons and the taskbar by the same percentage for the selected monitor.
  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings, or open Settings → System → Display.
  2. Select the monitor you want to change at the top.
  3. Under Scale & layout, open Scale and choose a value such as 125% or 150%.
  4. Leave Display resolution on the value marked Recommended.
  5. Sign out and back in if some apps look wrong.
Run dialog (Windows + R)
ms-settings:display
  • ms-settings:display — opens Display settings
⚠️
Avoid custom scaling unless you must

Custom scaling can cause blurry text, oversized windows and cut-off dialogs, and it needs a sign-out. Standard values such as 100%, 125%, 150%, 175% and 200% are the most reliable.

🎯You will see: Text, icons, windows and the taskbar all grow or shrink. The Settings window itself resizes.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Choose the value marked Recommended in the Scale list.
03Change desktop icon size: right-click View or Ctrl + scrollEasy⏱ 1 minDesktop icon pictures
Best forDesktop icons are too big, too small or inconsistent.
What it changesOnly the icon pictures on the desktop change. Label text stays at the size set by Text size and Scale.

Option A: View menu

  1. Right-click an empty spot on the desktop.
  2. Choose View, then Large icons, Medium icons or Small icons.

Option B: Ctrl and the scroll wheel

  1. Click an empty spot on the desktop.
  2. Hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel up to enlarge icons or down to shrink them.

Option C: Laptop touchpad

  1. Hold Ctrl and use a two-finger scroll on the touchpad.
💡
Why icons suddenly change size

An accidental Ctrl + scroll is a very common cause. A changed display scale or resolution also resizes everything.

🎯You will see: Icons change size immediately, and the label text stays the same.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Right-click the desktop, choose View and pick Medium icons.
04Change desktop icon label text: what Windows 11 can and cannot doBasic⏱ 5 minIcon label text size
Best forYou want the text under desktop icons larger or smaller, without changing the whole screen.
What it changesWindows 11 has no separate font-size setting for desktop icon labels only. The labels follow the Text size slider and Scale.
  1. Bigger labels, same icons: raise Text size (Method 1) and keep your current icon size.
  2. Bigger icons, same labels: use Large icons or Ctrl + scroll (Method 3) and leave Text size alone.
  3. Everything bigger: raise Scale (Method 2), or combine a higher Text size with Large icons.
  4. Smaller labels: lower Text size to 100% and, if needed, lower Scale or use a higher resolution that your screen supports natively.
  5. Labels cut off or wrapping: change icon size or increase icon spacing (Method 5).
⚠️
Be careful with “icon font” tweaks

Old Windows 10 registry files that change IconFont may not work the same on Windows 11 and can affect other items. Because there is no supported label-only control, use the combos above, and avoid unverified tools that change system fonts.

🎯You will see: Labels and icons end up in the combination you chose.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Reset Text size to 100%, Scale to Recommended and desktop icons to Medium.
05Adjust icon spacing and label width with the registryAdvanced⏱ 10 minLabels wrap or cut off, spacing too wide or tight
Best forDesktop icons are too close or too far apart, or long labels wrap badly.
What it changesTwo values in the registry, IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing, control horizontal and vertical spacing of desktop icons for your account.
  1. Note your current values first. Defaults vary by Windows version and scale. A common default is around -1125.
  2. Press Windows + R, run regedit, and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics.
  3. Right-click WindowMetrics, choose Export and save a backup.
  4. Double-click IconSpacing (horizontal) or IconVerticalSpacing (vertical) and enter a negative number. A more negative value gives more space, for example -1500 or -1800.
  5. Sign out and back in, or restart Windows Explorer.
PowerShell
Get-ItemProperty "HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" | Select-Object IconSpacing, IconVerticalSpacing
  • Get-ItemProperty — reads the current spacing values so you can note them before editing
⚠️
Back up and keep the minus sign

These are string values, and the minus sign matters. Restore your saved original values, or the note you made, to undo the change. Windows 11 versions since 22H2 changed default spacing, so do not copy numbers blindly from older guides.

🎯You will see: After you sign in again, desktop icons sit closer together or farther apart.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Set both values back to the originals you noted, or import your exported .reg backup, and sign in again.
06Arrange the desktop: Auto arrange, Align to grid, Show icons, Desktop icon settingsEasy⏱ 3 minMessy, missing or jumping icons
Best forIcons are scattered, missing, or you want This PC and Recycle Bin back.
What it changesThese options control where icons sit and which system icons appear.
  1. Right-click the desktop and open View.
  2. Tick or untick Auto arrange icons. Leave it off if you want to place icons freely.
  3. Tick Align icons to grid for neat spacing.
  4. Make sure Show desktop icons is ticked.
  5. To add This PC, Recycle Bin, Network and User’s Files, open Settings → Personalization → Themes → Desktop icon settings.
  6. In that window, untick Allow themes to change desktop icons if themes keep changing your icons.
Run dialog (Windows + R)
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,0
ms-settings:themes
  • rundll32 … desk.cpl,,0 — opens the Desktop Icon Settings dialog directly
  • ms-settings:themes — opens the Themes page
🎯You will see: Icons sit where you put them, and the system icons you chose appear.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Reverse the same options. Right-click, View, Sort by also reorders icons by name, size or date.
07Resize File Explorer icons and use Compact viewEasy⏱ 2 minFolder views
Best forFolder icons or thumbnails are too small or too large, or the file list feels too spread out.
What it changesFile Explorer has its own view sizes, separate from the desktop.
  1. Open File Explorer and click View on the toolbar.
  2. Choose Extra large icons, Large icons, Medium icons, Small icons, List, Details or Tiles.
  3. Or hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel inside the folder.
  4. Open View → Show → Compact view to tighten spacing between items.
  5. To use the same view for every folder of that type, open See more (…) → Options → View → Apply to Folders.

File Explorer shortcuts

  • Ctrl + Shift + 1: Extra large icons
  • Ctrl + Shift + 2: Large icons
  • Ctrl + Shift + 3: Medium icons
  • Ctrl + Shift + 4: Small icons
  • Ctrl + Shift + 5: List
  • Ctrl + Shift + 6: Details
🎯You will see: The folder shows the new view, and Compact view reduces item spacing.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Choose another view, or untick Compact view.
08Resize taskbar and Start iconsBasic⏱ 3 minTaskbar too big, small or crowded
Best forTaskbar icons are too large or too small, or the taskbar is crowded.
What it changesTaskbar icon size follows Scale, and newer builds add taskbar size options. The Text size slider does not change taskbar icons.
  1. Right-click the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings, or open Settings → Personalization → Taskbar.
  2. Expand Taskbar behaviors.
  3. Look for Show smaller taskbar buttons and choose Always, When taskbar is full or Never.
  4. On newer builds you may see Taskbar size with a smaller preset instead.
  5. For bigger taskbar icons, raise Scale (Method 2).
Run dialog (Windows + R)
ms-settings:taskbar
  • ms-settings:taskbar — opens Taskbar settings
💡
Availability depends on your build

The Show smaller taskbar buttons option arrived in Windows 11 builds in early 2025, and Microsoft has tested newer taskbar size and position controls in Insider builds in 2026. If you do not see them, your build does not have them yet. Registry tricks to resize the taskbar are unsupported.

🎯You will see: Taskbar icons and height shrink or return to normal.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Set Show smaller taskbar buttons to Never, or choose the standard Taskbar size.
09Zoom inside apps: browsers, Office, Teams and MagnifierEasy⏱ 2 minOne app only, temporary zoom
Best forOnly one app or web page looks too small, or you need a quick temporary zoom.
What it changesApp zoom changes the content of one app or site, without changing Windows.
  1. Browsers and many apps: press Ctrl + Plus to zoom in, Ctrl + Minus to zoom out and Ctrl + 0 to reset.
  2. Edge: Settings, Appearance, Fonts lets you change the default font size. Chrome has a similar fonts setting.
  3. Word, Excel, Outlook: use the zoom slider at the bottom right, or Ctrl + scroll.
  4. Magnifier: press Windows + Plus to zoom the screen, Windows + Minus to zoom out and Windows + Esc to close.
  5. Teams and similar apps: check the app’s own zoom or appearance settings.
🎯You will see: The app content changes size while the rest of Windows stays the same.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Press Ctrl + 0, or close Magnifier with Windows + Esc.
10Set sizes per monitor, laptop and external displaysBasic⏱ 5 minMultiple monitors
Best forA laptop screen and an external monitor need different sizes, or windows jump between them.
What it changesScale is set for each monitor separately, and resolution decides how large things appear.
  1. Open Settings → System → Display and click Identify to see monitor numbers.
  2. Select a monitor, set its Scale and keep Display resolution on Recommended.
  3. Repeat for each monitor.
  4. Use Make this my main display for the one that should hold the taskbar and icons.
  5. For remote desktop or virtual machines, adjust the client’s display or smart sizing settings if text looks wrong.
💡
Keep monitor order stable

Windows remembers desktop icon positions by monitor. Connecting monitors in a consistent order helps icons stay where you put them.

🎯You will see: Each monitor shows text and icons at a comfortable size.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Select the monitor again and choose its Recommended scale.
11Use registry, PowerShell and scripts (managed PCs)Advanced⏱ 10 minIT admins and automation
Best forYou want to read or set text size for many users, or script a setup.
What it changesThe Text size slider stores its value in the registry. Scripts can read or set it, but Settings is the safest way to apply all related values.
  1. Read the current text scale from PowerShell.
  2. To set it by script for the current user, write TextScaleFactor (a number matching the slider, 100 to 225).
  3. Sign out and sign in, or restart apps, so Windows picks up the change.
  4. Test on one account first. The Settings slider also updates other values, so a script alone may not give identical results.
PowerShell
Get-ItemProperty "HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Accessibility" -Name TextScaleFactor
  • TextScaleFactor — the stored text size percentage for the current user
Command Prompt (current user)
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Accessibility" /v TextScaleFactor /t REG_DWORD /d 125 /f
  • /d 125 — sets the text size to 125 percent (use a value from 100 to 225)
⚠️
No dedicated policy

I did not find a built-in Group Policy or Intune setting for text size or desktop icon size. Organizations usually deploy a script or user profile settings. Test carefully, and do not edit the registry on machines you do not manage.

🎯You will see: After signing in again, Settings shows the new text size percentage.
↪️To undo or if it fails: Set TextScaleFactor back to 100, or use the Text size slider.
12Fix blurry text, icons that reset, icons that move and missing Scale optionsBasic⏱ 15 minProblems after changing sizes
Best forText looks fuzzy, icons revert after a restart, they rearrange, or the scale option will not change.
What it changesThese problems come from scaling, display changes, Explorer restarts, themes, cloud sync or an icon cache problem.

Blurry text

  1. Set Scale to a standard value and keep resolution on Recommended.
  2. Open Settings → System → Display → Scale and turn on Let Windows try to fix apps so they’re not blurry if it appears.
  3. Run Adjust ClearType text from Start search.
  4. For one app, open its shortcut Properties, Compatibility, Change high DPI settings and try overriding scaling.

Icons revert size or rearrange

  1. Right-click the desktop, View, and turn Auto arrange icons off.
  2. Untick Allow themes to change desktop icons in Desktop icon settings.
  3. Keep monitor setup and resolution consistent, since display changes and Explorer restarts can rebuild the layout.
  4. Check OneDrive desktop sync, which can add icons after updates.
  5. Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager and test again.

Clear a damaged icon cache

  1. Press Windows + R, paste the path below and press Enter.
  2. Delete files named iconcache* (skip any in use), then restart Explorer or the PC.
Run dialog (Windows + R)
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
  • iconcache* — these files hold cached icon pictures and are rebuilt automatically

Reset to defaults

  1. Text size to 100% and Scale to Recommended.
  2. Desktop icons to Medium icons, icon spacing back to your noted values, and Auto arrange as you prefer.
🎯You will see: Text is sharp, icons stay at your size after restarting, and layout is stable.
↪️To undo or if it fails: If problems continue, update the graphics driver and see our guide on fixing wrong screen resolution and scaling.

Edit only what you manage

Changing registry values affects the signed-in account. Back them up first, test on one PC and do not edit machines you do not manage. Some community guides mention a policy named Disable desktop icon reordering under User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Desktop, which I could not confirm, so check your policy editor before relying on it.

What Others Report in 2026

Public sources checked on October 12, 2026. These are user reports and notes, not guaranteed behavior.

💡
Icons that revert or rearrange

Microsoft Q&A and Tech Community threads from 2025 and 2026 describe desktop icons that rearrange or return to a default layout or size after restarts or updates. Replies point to display or resolution changes, Explorer restarts, multi-monitor setups and the Auto arrange option, and one Microsoft Q&A answer states that Microsoft is aware of icons reverting size after reboot. Suggested steps include turning off Auto arrange, stopping themes from changing icons, keeping monitor order stable and clearing the icon cache.

⚠️
OneDrive desktop sync can add icons

A May 2026 Microsoft Q&A answer notes that an update can re-enable folder sync, such as OneDrive Desktop sync, which can bring many unexpected files and icons onto the desktop. Check whether your desktop path points to OneDrive and turn off Desktop sync if you do not want it.

✅
Taskbar size is changing

Windows 11 added Show smaller taskbar buttons in early 2025. During 2026 Microsoft has tested taskbar position and a dedicated taskbar size control in Insider builds, and public sources describe them as close to release but dependent on your channel and build. Check Settings, Personalization, Taskbar, Taskbar behaviors on your PC.

Do’s and Don’ts

✅ Do

  • Start with Text size or Scale, not the registry
  • Keep resolution on Recommended
  • Change one setting at a time
  • Back up before editing the registry
  • Use Ctrl + 0 to reset app zoom

🚫 Don’t

  • Use custom scaling unless you must
  • Lower resolution to make things bigger, which blurs text
  • Use unverified font or icon changer tools
  • Copy icon spacing numbers from old guides without noting your own
  • Forget that a stray Ctrl + scroll resizes icons

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change text size and desktop icon size in Windows 11?
For text only, open Settings, Accessibility, Text size and move the slider. For everything, use Settings, System, Display, Scale. For desktop icons, right-click the desktop, choose View and pick Large, Medium or Small icons, or hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel.
How do I change the text size of desktop icons in Windows 11?
Windows 11 has no separate control for desktop icon label text. The labels follow the Text size slider in Accessibility and the display Scale. To get labels larger without enlarging everything, raise Text size and keep your current icon size.
What is the difference between Text size and Scale?
Text size only enlarges text. Scale enlarges everything for a monitor, including text, apps, icons and the taskbar. Use Text size when only the words are small and Scale when the whole screen looks small.
Why did my desktop icons suddenly get bigger or smaller?
An accidental Ctrl and mouse wheel scroll, a changed display scale or resolution, or a display driver change are the usual causes. Reset the size from the View menu and check Settings, System, Display.
How do I reduce icon size on the desktop in Windows 11?
Right-click the desktop, choose View, then Small icons, or hold Ctrl and scroll down. For smaller everything, lower the display Scale or use the native resolution your screen supports.
Does the Text size slider change taskbar icons?
No. It changes text only. Taskbar icon size follows Scale, and newer builds have the Show smaller taskbar buttons or Taskbar size options in Taskbar behaviors.
How can I change desktop icon spacing or text width?
Desktop icon spacing is controlled by the IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing values in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel, Desktop, WindowMetrics. Back up the key, change the values and sign out and in. There is no spacing option in Settings.
Can I change text size with Command Prompt or PowerShell?
The Text size slider stores its value in TextScaleFactor under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Accessibility. You can read or set it with PowerShell or reg add, then sign out and in, but the Settings slider is the most reliable way.
Is there a Group Policy for text size or icon size?
I did not find a built-in Group Policy or Intune setting for text size or desktop icon size. Administrators usually use a script or profile settings, and should test first.
Do these steps work on Windows 11 Home and Pro?
Yes. Text size, Scale, View sizes and taskbar options are available in Home, Pro, Enterprise and Education, with some newer taskbar options depending on the build.
Why is my text blurry after I changed the scale?
The app may not support high DPI, the scale may be a custom value, or the resolution is not native. Use a standard Scale, keep resolution on Recommended, turn on the blurry-apps fix and run ClearType.
Why do my desktop icons go back to the default size or rearrange after restart?
Display changes, Explorer restarts, multi-monitor setups, themes changing icons or cloud sync can rebuild the desktop layout. Turn off Auto arrange, stop themes changing icons, keep monitors consistent and clear the icon cache if needed.
What is the best scale for a laptop or monitor?
Use the value Windows marks as Recommended. Many 1080p laptops use 125%, 24 inch 1080p monitors often use 100%, and 4K monitors or laptops often use 150% to 200%.
How do I make File Explorer icons bigger?
Open File Explorer, click View and choose Extra large, Large or Medium icons, or hold Ctrl and scroll. You can also turn on Compact view to tighten spacing.
Does changing text size affect Windows 10 as well?
The Text size slider and per-monitor scale exist in Windows 10, with different menu names. Desktop icon size works the same way with View and Ctrl scroll. This guide focuses on Windows 11.
How do I reset everything to default?
Set Text size to 100%, Scale to the Recommended value, desktop icons to Medium icons and reset any icon spacing values you changed.

Bottom line

In Windows 11, Text size changes only text, Scale changes everything, and the View menu or Ctrl with the wheel changes desktop icons. Windows has no separate setting for icon label text, so combine Text size with icon size, and use the registry spacing values only if you need them. Keep resolution on Recommended, use standard Scale values, and check Auto arrange, themes and cloud sync if icons reset or move.
